“Think and Grow Rich”, the number one bestselling book on how to build wealth, was written by a man who came from nothing. American author Napoleon Hill was born on October 26, 1883 in a one-room Appalachian cabin in Southwest Virginia. His mother died when Hill was only 10 years old. According to his biographer Tom Butler-Bowdon, Hill became a reporter at age 13 for a variety of local newspapers in Wise County, Virginia. He saved his earnings from his reporting work in order to attend law school, but was unable to complete his degree due to lack of funds.
Hill subsequently returned to journalism. In 1908, he interviewed millionaire and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. Carnegie believed that he owed his wealth to a philosophical formula that could be broken down into 16 distinct “laws” of success. He encouraged Hill to interview other millionaires and titans of industry in order to develop the formula into a book. Hill proceeded to interview Alexander Graham Bell, William Wrigley and 500 other successful individuals about their secret to success. The result was “Think and Grow Rich”, which was first published in 1937. Since its publication, “Think and Grow Rich” has sold over 70 million copies and remains a favorite among top achievers in every industry and profession.
The 13 principles that have catapulted “Think and Grow Rich” to perennial bestseller status are based on the power of personal belief. The book owes its extraordinary success not to a numbers-based formula but rather to an all-encompassing view of the relationship between personal habits and professional success. Hill’s trademark line, “What the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve” summarizes both the tone and purpose of the book. Instead of teaching people to crunch quarterly reports, the book implores the reader to expand his or her mind. By allowing ourselves to envision our future and fully appreciate the opportunities that surround us on a daily basis, success isn’t just possible; it’s almost guaranteed. Hill explores how negative thinking and energy tend to engender poor outcomes, while consistent positive energy and behavior create excellent opportunities.
“Think and Grow Rich” has created millions of millionaires. As bestselling author and motivational speaker Brian Tracy notes, “This is the best single book on personal success ever written. It made me a millionaire—starting from nothing.”
Of course, Hill didn’t simply interview successful people and then disappear into obscurity. He applied the principles in his book to his own life. From 1933 to 1936, he became an advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. By the time of his death on November 8, 1970, “Think and Grow Rich” had already sold 20 million copies. As of the 21st century, “Think and Grow Rich” has sold over 70 million copies and counting.
